The only thing I have checked in the Unified View Options is Ignore Layers with Different Scale. I have Show Others selected and all the layers are set to visible. This is annoying. Forgive me if there have already been posts on this one.

There used to be a mapping function in the oip in previous versions of VW which was a great way to tweak textures without rendering an entire scene. Now that function has been elimimated (WHY??!)

As a fall back, I have tried going to "Active Only" in my class setting to isolate the object I want to tweak. But in doing so, the object only renders in grey tones - not in the actual texture.

Have I missed something? Is there still a way to refine textures easily without rendering an entire scene?

thanks]]>

I am importing images from illustrator to vectorworks which have a transparent background (to be specific the images is a tree with many tiny leaves).
I know I can import it or even copy and paste it then change the fill (in vectorworks) to none and have the white background disappear.
Here is the problem:

When I do this the entire background never disappears, there is always a thin white trim around the tree branches and leaves which doesn't exist in the original image... I have tried to import in every manor including .dwg and .dxf, .tif, .png, .jpg, etc. ]]>

 Hallo,

I recently created some simple Concrete Stairs using the new Stair PIO,
to try out some lighting possibilities for a Staircase.

When I tried applying the Textures by using the Graphical Atributes of the new Stair PIO I ran into some Problems which I couldn't solve.

The textures seem to be applied in Plane Mode to the Parts of the Stair.
This happens also, if I give the Parts a Class, and apply the texture by setting the graphical attributes to "Class Texture".

Is this a bug, or am too ... to find the right place to switch the textures to render in Cube Mode?

I attach a Testfile and pdf that shows what I mean.

Does anybody have a solution?

Horst M.

I believe that the problem is perceptual and that the renderworks engine has no ability to perceive. It just traces it's rays and lets them be. Instead of attempting to get your desired effect in VW, might I suggest getting close and then finishing off the render in Photoshop? A few selective tweaks here and there with the curves tool should get you much closer to what you want. Here's an example:

 Hi Fergy,

I see that your event has passed. I hope it went well.

As this is a topic that I have a special interest in, I am logging my findings here. The question about foreground/background renders has been answered, so I won't address it.

Final Gather

For our purposes, Final Gather (FG) doesn't give enough bang for the buck; the rendering times are ridiculous and there's little effect. In a small room with only a couple of lights, FG can give some really nice results because it deals with bounced and scattered light. FG will compute the ambient light, creating very realistic-looking lighting, so you can light whole a room by pointing a single instrument at the ceiling. In situations like ours, with large rooms and few large, light-colored, reflective surfaces, FG makes very little difference in the final product. I leave it turned off and save _days_ of rendering time. If I need ambient bounce, I'll fake it with another light. The aded benefit here is that I have c]]>

it generally makes sense for
the "use at creation" setting
to be ON so that viewports can
be altered as above, and for
greater speed of drawing if you
are rigorous in your use of classes.
e.g. in my case:
structure-existing = thick black pen + grey hatch
structure-brick = thick black pen + red hatch
structure-conc = thick black pen + green hatch
structure-demolished = medium dashed red pen + no fill
etc etc

the weirdness here is that
windoor has graphic styles
of its own that can get
confused with the normal
class styles. the only
class that i set OFF for
"use at creation" is windoor's
2D objects/swing class so
that windoor can set the
swing to be different to
the door + jambs

I just found this out recently.

If you're setting the Overall button to Class Texture with all the other parts set to "Revert to Overall", you won't get a texture on your wall unless you have the center texture checked under the wall tab in the class attributes edit window for that particular class. Apparently that's where the "Overall (class texture)" is connected to, the center texture.

You can create a polygon & extrude it a little then from the Resource Browser drag and drop the texture onto it.

Be sure your polygon has a fill otherwise the texture won't be visible when you render the model.

Welcome dusk04, not sure which VW's version you are using (you should create a signature with your OS and VW info!) however if you have "Architect", "Landmark" or "Designer" you should have a Resource File called "Landscape Objects-Residential" (see attached screen shot). There are a couple kidney shaped pools in here.

For curved and winding pathways there are a lot of ways to go, perhaps the easiest is to start with a POLYLINE in the second (or third) mode and then use the OFFSET tool to create the other side. If you connect both Polylines with lines you can then select all four objects and use the COMPOSE command to create a solid shape which can then be made into a hardscape or floor, or it can be extruded or simply left as a 2d filled or hatched object. See second attached shot.

Hope that helps.... P]]>

Is there something that determines the amount of distance fall off of a light source, like lumen output or a set distance? I'd like to get a more accurate rendering from either a point light source or an accurate light, but the distance fall off, whether sharp or smooth, seems very short. The none setting doesn't get the look i want. A 60W A19 clear accurate lamp doesn't hardly light a room 15' x 15'. I've got a HDRI at 100% and a sun coming in through a couple windows and still the rooms seems way too dark. Any suggestions?

 Hello,

I'm trying to do an interior render with soft (mapped) shadows that are cast through windows.
But there are no cast shadows rendered where the light pass through the glass.

You can see the attached file below - I had to remove all the glass from windows to have shadows inside.
But I still need to have glass walls inside that stop the shadows, so it doesn't realy solve my problem.

The strange think is that first everything was working just fine (see mapped-shadow-2.jpg with glass in the windows).

I also found the post below about that bug. But it is the only reference I found and it is quite old. Cited post :

The slowdown in performance due to 32 bit emulation is not that noticeable to me. And having a 64 bit system far outweighs that slowdown anyway, especially for higher end programs like Cinema 4d and Photoshop.

The 3 gig switch everyone keeps talking about should be approached with a bit of caution. The video card can get cranky when the switch is invoked. If you're comfortable playing around with it you might want to read up a bit on it on the web. ]]>

I have two, abutting walls with different bottom heights so the textures aren't lining up. Textures are assigned by class. When I look at the rendering tab for the wall that needs to be re-mapped, all controls are greyed out so I can't make any changes. If I manually assign the texture, I can adjust the the mapping so that everything lines up BUT then I can't use class overrides to look at different material options.

Am I missing something or can you really not change the mapping of class applied textures?

Hold the presses. Not 2 minutes after posting the last comment, I figured out the problem. I think it might be a bug. It's related to the black background preference. If you wish to experiment for yourself, you can open up that file then:
1. Set VW preferences to black background on.
2. Enter a texture in gobo 1; FQRW
3. Observe lack of light and gobo image.
4. with FQRW still on, switch preferences to white background.
5. Observe unchanged lack of light and gobo image.
6. with FQRW still on, reenter the name of the texture in gobo 1 in the OIP.
7. Presto. gobo.

Now... here it gets even funkier...

8. Keeping FQRW on, change prefs back to black background
9. Now you probably have a gobo image AND a black background!
10. BUT... now try reentering in the texture name in gobo 1 of the OIP (or a different texture)
11. Alas, no more gobo.

I also had a friend try this out and the same results occurred.

So, now that I've figured out my problem, I can work around it by wor]]>

 This is what I mean....

In this example the soffit has a texture that doesn't cast shadows. The fixture symbol has an ies data light source, and the geometry of the fixture is taken from the dxf provided by the manufacturer.

No need to "drill" a hole in the soffit. Just insert the symbol and set the z value.

 Mat,
Please go see my post in SGG Works with the AFI Renders PDF.

http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=118544&gonew=1#UNREAD

The stage was with Black Chrome. Maybe you need to add some lights, just some small ones, to bring out the highlight points.
Your light source would need to be on the same side as the camera.

Rendering something like this on such a small scale would be difficult in any render, try and change your white background to black.

edit add:
I had some troble trying to load the real texture on here, but added a screen shot of the attributes.
See haw that works]]>

I would go with the one that supports the best opengl and has the larger memory. Not for the rendering, but just to have a burlier card when using dual monitors with lots of screen refreshing. I don't think your motherboard cares whether it's two or one card.

Your website has a lot of great names and pictures, but isn't really ripe for a good google ranking. Not enough phrase dependent searches there. I would think too, with all of the commercial volume you deal in, you could link to some suppliers and help make your website more bouyant. Just my two cents. ]]>

 Hi all,
I've got a client that can't visualize...(don't we all?)
I'm sending him some plans with the camera shots rendered as close ups and long shots. (see attachment)
My questions are:
1. What settings should I use for a 18:1 zoom lens at full zoom in?
2. What settings should I use for a 18:1 zoom lens at full zoom out?
3. Same questions for a 33:1 or a 44:1 zoom lens.
4. Is there a formula for figuring the "film size" and "field of view" for zoom lenses on video cameras?
TIA

 Vincent,

1. Make a SLVP showing the bottom floor only, rendered in wireframe.
2. Duplicate or copy & paste the SLVP directly on top of the first SLVP (so that they are perfectly aligned.)
3. Change the layers in this SLVP to show the middle floor only.
4. Change rendering mode for this SLVP to FQRW.
5. Duplicate or copy & paste this SLVP directly on top of the second SLVP (so that they are perfectly aligned.)
6. Change layers to show only top floor.
7. Change rendering mode to wireframe.

 1) Make sure that there is no (active/on) SUN in the file prior to running the command (if there is it will create an erroneous static shadow).

2) Make sure the file is rendered in Final Quality RW's prior to invoking the command.

3) In the Solar Animation dialog, make sure that the Lat/Long is set correctly, that the date is correct, and that the Page North is correct..

3) For faster results change the "minutes per daylight frame" setting to something reasonable, like 30 minutes per frame. You can always increase it later if you need more accuracy. (Remember that each frame must render -- it's sort of like a giant digital flip-book).

Let us know if that helps.]]>

I have several buildings referenced from separate drawings into one layout drawing. made copies of some of the layout vp;s into several positions on site

Then i created a sheetlayer to show larger scale parts of this layout drawing.

But now suddenly some of the buildings dissappear from the final layout.

Have checked classes and layer settings everywhere...

Any ideas.

driving me crazy - deadline looming.

btw i have recreated a similar viewport to the same sheet layer and then 4 of the 8 buildings reappeared on the original vp as well as on the new one, but not all of them...
